Tips for a smooth move

Planning your move

If you are moving house, flat or simply a student moving bags and boxes, here are a few tips to help things move more smoothly!
Remember Durrants Removals has a tipping service for any unwanted furniture.

Packing Tips

You will require the following for self-packing: Boxes, marker\ pen, bubble wrap, newspaper, tissue paper, tape, scissors and wardrobe cartons.

Use strong boxes and containers that can be secured tightly. If you are getting your boxes from your local shop, banana boxes are usually the strongest and so are best for heavy items. Pack audio\video equipment in their original boxes.  Avoid loading more than 50 pounds into one box. Label each box and indicate the following: (a) Which room it should go in, and (b) if it is fragile (c) content description (d) which way up the box is to be kept. Cushion contents with packing material such as bubble wrap, newspaper or tissue paper.

Save room by using towels and blankets to wrap fragile items. Pack books tightly on end in small boxes. Mirrors and pictures which are small enough to fit into a box, wrap them with bubble wrap and pack them standing on end as opposed to flat stacked. Larger mirrors and pictures should all be placed together in an allocated area for the removers to wrap with blankets for individual attention. Carry all valuables with you personally.

Flat packed or System furniture

This can be difficult! In theory, once assembled, it is not advised to disassemble the item again, as sometimes it no longer fits together as well as it used to. Due to this, the item can't be covered by insurance. You can move it complete but joints may loosen.

Just before moving day...

Empty all drawers, and pack the contents. Leave a box in the bedrooms to pack the bedding you used on the night prior to the move. Have a bag for any personal items you require to be at hand ie. Toilet roll, Contact lens solution, soap etc.

Work out where you want your possessions in the new home - drawing a plan is helpful. Make sure someone is at the new house to show the removers where things go.

If you are moving to a flat you will need priority for the lift! If the lift is small (or non-existent) warn us in advance - do not leave it until the van arrives.

Unloading

You've seen the new house, we haven't. Warn us about unexpected hazards such as poor access, small doorways, spiral staircases or trees close by. Try to have children and pets looked after by relatives or neighbours if possible. Before you leave the house, check the rooms to make sure nothing has been left behind. Allocate a special box for the kettle, tea bags, sugar and milk and enough mugs for all. It's thirsty work you know!
